Biography: Scottish-born portrait and genre painter, David Allan studied in Rome from 1767 to 1777 under Gavin Hamilton. While there, he won a prize for a historical painting at the Accademia di San Luca. He moved to London in 1777 and then settled in Edinburgh three years later. He established himself as a portraitist and also created many scenes of French and Italian life.
