Biography: Balthasar van der Ast first trained under his brother-in-law, Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder in Middelburgh. He then came under the influence of Jan Davidsz de Heem while living in Utrecht. Ast finally settled in Delft in 1632. His paintings were primarily still-lifes, usually of fruit, shells, and flowers.
