Biography:
Well-educated under the encouragement of this merchant father, Hendrik van Balen was either trained by an Italian painter in Antwerp of absorbed that influence on his travels in Italy from 1595 to 1600. Van Balen became a master at the Guild of St. Luke in 1592 and began teaching regularly ten years later. He taught many talented pupils such as Anthony van Dyck and Frans Snyder. Known for his cabinet pictures and large altarpieces, Van Balen usually favored allegorical and mythological subjects. In addition, he painted small nudes and landscapes on copper or oak.
