Biography: Romare Howard Bearden’s family settled in Harlem, New York when he was three years old. Bearden attended New York University to study medicine where he began drawing cartoons and worked as the art editor for the student publication, Medley. He eventually switched his career path to art and took evening classes at the Art Students’ League under George Grosz. He served in the military during WWII, and then traveled to Europe to study at the Sorbonne. After returning to the States in 1952, Bearden began producing collages as well as painting urban landscapes and scenes.
