Biography:
George Caleb Bingham studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, before traveling throughout Europe and North America. Afterwards, he settled in Missouri and became interested in the wilderness and landscape of the area. This resulted in some of his finest work of boats men and trappers in Missouri. However, Bingham returned to Europe to study in Düsseldorf and subsequently began painting in the academic style of that time in Germany. He was elected State Legislator in 1848, and eventually abandoned his art for a full time political career.
