Biography:
Andre Breton is credited with founding the Surrealist movement. It began with the publishing of his Manifeste du surrealisme in 1924. A year later, the movement’s first exhibition was held at the Galerie Pierre in Paris. Breton also wrote a number of other articles on the movement and helped launch two Surrealist periodicals, La Revolution Surrealiste and Le Surrealisme au service de la revolution. Breton moved to New York in 1941 where he and a group of other artists assisted in the development of the Abstract Expressionist movement. He returned to Paris five years later just as the Surrealist movement was declining.
