Biography:
Born in Venice as Giovanni Antonio Canale, Canaletto traveled to Rome in 1719 to study architecture. Shortly after he returned to his home city to paint the architectural scenes for which he is known. Canaletto lived in London from 1746 to 1753 and painted similar themes there. He became a member of the Venice Academy in 1763 and established himself as a leading figure in Italian art.
