Biography: Vicente Carducho was born in Florence but moved to Spain at the age of nine with his brother Bartolome. He apprenticed to his brother, first working on King Philip II’s Escorial palace. Carducho was taught in the classical Italian tradition as a result of this training. He suceeded his brother as royal painter in 1609 and kept the position for life despite the arrival of the talented young artist, Diego Velazquez in 1623. In 1632, Carducho finished fifty-six canvases that illustrated the lived of Saint Bruno and others for a Carthusian monastery near Segovia. Carducho was also a recognized art theorist who wrote Dialogos de la Pintura in 1633.
