Biography:
Asmus Jakob Carstens was born in Denmark. He initially trained at the Copenhagen Academy. Carstens attempted to visit Rome in 1783 but ran out of money and made it only to Mantua. He returned to Germany and worked as a teacher at the Berlin Academy beginning in 1788. Four years later, he received a grant to travel to Rome where he remained until his death ten years later.
