Biography: Clodion first studied in Paris in the workshop of his uncle and Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. After winning the Prix de Rome, he moved to Italy to study antique, Renaissance, and Baroque and worked in the same studio as Jean-Antoine Houdon. During this time Clodion took an interest in clay modeling, especially the terracotta medium. He created terracotta sculptures that were considered art rather than models for larger statues. Clodion returned to Paris in 1771 still working with terracotta but also in other medias. He and his brothers made decorative objects derived from pagan artifacts and the Rococo style. In his late career, Clodion adapted to the up and coming Neoclassical style and worked on public monuments in Paris
