Biography:
Gilles-Francois-Joseph Closson was born in Liege. He moved to Paris at the age of nineteen and studied under Romantic artist, Antoine-Jean Gros. He returned to his hometown in 1824 where he won the Pension Darchis, which allowed him to travel to Rome. While in Rome, Closson painted mostly landscapes and also drew antique subjects and genre scenes of everyday life. Upon his return to Liege in 1829, he continued working with landscapes and exhibited them at the Salons in Brussels, Ghent, and Liege. In 1838, Closson was appointed professor at the new Academie Liege, a position which he devoted himself to until his death in 1842.
