Biography:
Gillis van Coninxloo was born into a long line of painters. He first apprenticed under Pieter Coecke van Aelst in Antwerp and later joined the painter’s Guild of Saint Luke there after a visit to France. In 1585, Coninxloo fled north to escape religious persecution and settled in Germany in 1587. His brief work drawing tapestry cartoons may have inspired his shift from traditional landscape to those that incorporated view obstructions, sharp contrasts, and detailed foliage. Coninxloo moved to Amsterdam in 1595 where his work became more realistic but also were idealized and decorative. His work was very influential in the development of the Dutch realist painters in the 1600’s.
