Biography:
Swedish portraitist, Michael Dahl settled in London in 1689 and began a competitive rivalry with Kneller. Although Kneller’s work was more fashionable, Dahl’s portraits were more sincere and telling of his sitters. He ran a busy and prolific studio in London. Several of his surviving works are held at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
