Biography:
Although Arthur Devis was born in Preston, he spent much of his career in London. He painted mostly small conversation piece works and intimate portraits. He was a minor figure during his lifetime but regained popularity during the 1930’s because of the delicacy of his paintings. Historians also appreciated his paintings because most of his sitters were wealthy middle class merchants and squires.
