Biography:
Thomas Doughty was born in Philadelphia, where he lived most of his life except for periods where he resided in Boston and New York. He was a self-taught painter, traveling to Europe in 1837 and 1845. Doughty was the first American painter to paint landscapes exclusively and is considered to be the forerunner of the Hudson River School. He was also a pioneer of lithography in the United States.
