Biography: Albrecht Dürer was born in Nuremberg, Germany to a goldsmith father who taught him the tradition of silverpoint drawing. He apprenticed to painter and book illustrator, Michael Wolgemut beginning in 1484 and learned woodcut engraving. Afterwards, he traveled in Italy, studying work by Leonardo da Vinci, Bellini, and Mantegna, who all influenced his development in art and theory. Dürer is well known for his engravings, however he was also a talented painter who focused on detail and observation.
