Biography: Aert de Gelder was Rembrandt’s student from 1661 to 1663 in Amsterdam. He later returned to his native city, Dordrecht and began painting biblical subjects and portraits. He always stuck closely to his Rembrandt influences but occasionally incorporated small Rococo elements. His stubborn approach to painting did little to elevate Gelder’s fame and influence.
