Biography: Giovanni di Paolo was a leading painter of the Sienese School. He lived in the Poggio district of the city, earning him the nickname Giovanni del Poggio. Although few details are known about his life, a number of his small religious works have survived. It is thought that he studied under Taddeo di Bartolo and influenced by Gentile da Fabriano and Sasetta. Despite these influences, Giovanni approach to painting was distinctive.
