Biography: Sir Lawrence Gowing was a respected painter and writer on art. He studied under Coldstream and initially adopted his mentor’s Euston Road style. He also experimented with abstraction. From 1965 to 1967, Gowing was the deputy director of the Tate Gallery and also a professor at a number of universities. He also wrote several books on artists such as Cezanne, Matisse, and Vermeer. In 1976, Gowing attracted attention with his large canvases depicting outlines of his own nude figure.
