Biography: Giovanni Francesco Barbieri was nicknamed Il Guernico, meaning “squint-eyed.” Despite this characteristic he was a talented sketcher and trained at the Carracci Academy and was influenced by Caravaggio. He painted the typical religious imagery and was commissioned by Pope Gregory XV to paint the ceiling at the Villa Ludovisi. His oil paintings used thick color and heightened emotions, qualities that made him the leading painter in Bologna after 1642.
