Biography: Jan Davidsz.de. Heem was born in Utrecht but worked mostly in Antwerp, moving there in 1635. His early work is based on the painting of Balthasar van der Ast but also shows the influence of Claesz and Heda. After moving to Antwerp, his flower still-lifes became exquisite examples of Flemish Baroque art and helped to form a link between the Flemish and Netherlandish Schools. Known as the greatest of the Dutch still-life painters, he is claimed by both schools.
