Biography:
Bartholomeus van der Helst was born in Haarlem where he father was an innkeeper. He moved to Amsterdam in 1636 and competed with Rembrandt for portrait commissions. With the influence of Anthony can Dyck, Van der Helst began producing his portraits in the popular style of his colleague and created his first large group portrait in 1643 titled Captain Bicker’s Company.
