Biography: John Frederick Herring was a member of an artistic family who specialized in sporting and animal subject matter. He preferred to paint racehorses and typically painted the likeness of the Derby and St. Leger winners. His worked was highly reproduced in engravings. Herring had three artist sons and a brother and it can be difficult to distinguish between the works of the various family members.
