Biography: Born in Dordrecht, Samuel van Hoogstraten developed his style of painting and printmaking by studying with Rembrandt and also traveling to London, Rome, Vienna, Amsterdam and The Hague. He specialized in a method of painting called peep-show boxes that contained a painted toy world looked at through a small hole. He also painted genre scenes and portraits. Hoogstraten also was a poet, etcher, art theorist, and director of the Dordrecht mint.
