Biography: Eugene Isabey studied and worked at the Louvre Museum, influenced by some of the leading artists of his era. He painted mostly watercolor landscapes. He began to travel in 1820 and went to Normandy and Britain. He returned to Normandy several times to paint land and seascapes. He also created illustrations across France for travel publications. In 1830, Isabey accompanied the French Expedition to Algiers as an illustrator. His paintings from this trip were unsuccessful on the market and encouraged him to switch to narrative and historical painting. He was also appointed to become one of Louis-Philippes court painters.
