Biography: Son and student of his father, Hendrick, Thomas de Keyser was Amsterdam’s municipal architect from 1662 until his death. However, he was better known as a portraitist and was the city’s leading artist in that genre until Rembrandt appeared on the scene in the 1630’s. He was most successful at painting small-scale portraits of full figures. He also created small equestrian paintings.
