Biography: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was born in Aschaffenburg, Germany and originally studied architecture in Dresden. In 1905, Krichner, along with fellow students Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt-Ruttluf began the Die Brucke movement. His paintings incorporated angular forms, bold and contrasting colors, and expressive themes. Kirchner served in the infantry in World War I, and afterwards recovered in Switzerland, painting scenes of the mountainous landscapes. Kirchner committed suicide in Davos, Switzerland in 1938.
