Biography: George Knapton studied under Richardson before spending the years from 1725 to 1732 in Italy. In 1736, he became a core member of the Society of Dilettanti and the group’s official painter. He created twenty-three oil portraits of the group’s members, paintings that are considered his best work. Knapton was also a well-known art connoisseur and was employed as the Keeper of the King’s Pictures from 1765 until his death.
