Biography: Laurent de la Hyre studied with his father and received his first commission for an altarpiece for the Capuchins in 1630. He painted religious subjects inspired by Nicolas Poussin and also mythological scenes set in Roman ruins. When La Hyre’s father died in 1643, he inherited his father’s wealth and moved to the country. He began painting landscapes that incorporated elements of Roman architecture. La Hyre also helped found the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1648.
