Biography: While in training, Louis Jean Francois Lagrenee was awarded the Grand Prix at the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1749. He briefly studied in Rome before gaining admittance to the Academie in 1755. Lagrenee was the director of the Saint Petersburg Academy at the Russian court from 1760 to 1762. He then returned to Paris where he became a professor and was given numerous important public commissions. Lagrenee was partly responsible for bringing French art out of the Rococo period and into a more classical style.
