Biography: Nicolas de Largilliere was born in Antwerp and then was employed as Sir Peter Lely’s assistant in England where he painted draperies and still-lifes. His style developed the influence of Anthony van Dyck. He moved to Paris in 1682 and joined the Academie Royale in 1686 and eventually became its director. Largilliere was a prolific portrait painter to the bourgeoisie. In addition, he painted group commemorative portraits, landscapes, still-lifes, and religious works.
