Biography: Jean-Pierre Latz moved from Cologne, Germany to Paris in 1719 to become an ebeniste. He married the daughter of an affluent property developer, which supplied him with finances and enabled him to create connections with Parisian upper class society. He specialized in clock cases and sold most of his furniture to foreign courts such as Prussia and Poland. He also worked for Madame Elisabeth, the daughter of Louis XV. In 1749, Latz’s workshop and tools were seized from him because he had violated guild regulations.
