Biography: Originally an architecture student, Fernand Léger converted to the study of painting while attending the Academie Julien in Paris in 1903. Although he was influenced by Picasso and Braque’s Cubist theories, he developed his own ideas that he deemed “the aesthetic of the machine.” After World War I, Léger turned to theatre, designing costumes and sets for the Swedish Ballet. It was around this time when he also worked on Le Ballet Mechanique, an abstract film collaboration with artist, Man Ray. Léger moved to the United States during World War II, where he taught at Yale and painted murals for the UN building in New York City. He returned to France at the end of his life to create
