Biography:
Born in Lithuania, Jacques Lipchitz first became a French citizen in 1925 and later gained American citizenship in 1958. He moved to Paris in 1909 and became a member of an avant-garde group that included Matisse, Modigliani, and Picasso. After 1914, Lipchitz became a pioneer of Cubist sculpture. After 1920, he style involved more open forms. A decade later, he was working with allegorical subjects taken from the Bible or classical mythology. He worked mostly in bronze but created some stone carvings Lipchitz moved to America in 1941 where he concerned himself with idea of spirituality in his artwork.
