Biography: Born as René Francois Ghislain Magritte in Lessines, Belgium, he studied at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels from 1916 to 1918. His initial work was in the commercial field, designing graphics for fashion magazines and wallpaper. Moved by the work of Giorgio de Chirico, Magritte founded to Belgian Surrealist group in 1924.
