Biography: Andrea Mantegna’s mentor and guardian was Paduan tailor and self-taught painter, Francisco Squarcione. Mantegna solidified his presence by created an altarpiece for the church of Santa Lucia in 1450. He then mastered the technique of perspective by studying the works of Donatello and Castagno while continuing to create religious paintings in and around Verona. The Duke of Mantua, Ludvico Gonzaga, summoned Mantegna to decorate his palaces in 1459. Subsequently, he created a series of tempera paintings based on the Triumph of Caesar that where purchased by Charles I.
