Biography:
Born in Germany, Hans von Marees worked mostly out of Italy, living there from 1864 to 1869 and settling there permanently in 1873. He mostly painted the human figure in a landscape setting. He was commissioned to paint a series of frescoes for the Zoological Institute of Naples in 1873. However, his lack of self-confidence did little to help his self-promotion, thus causing his career standstill. He died virtually unknown but was gained appreciation for his work at the beginning of the 20th century.
