Biography: Simon Marmion’s family was mostly comprised of painters from Amiens and learned the craft from his father before moving to Valenciennes to set up his own shop. In 1454, he was hired by Philip the Good, the duke of Burgundy to help decorate an elaborate banquet. He also worked for others in Burgundy’s elite including Duke Philp, Charles the Bold, Margaret of York. In addition to manuscript illumination, he also created paintings, altarpieces, portraits, and other decorations.
