Biography:
Claude Mellan, French engraver, was one of the most famous artists of this discipline during his lifetime. He made engravings of the work of Poussin and Vouet, but is mostly known for his portraiture. He is noted for his technical ability, varying the thickness of his lines in order to create light and shade rather than using the traditional cross-hatching method. Mellan’s most famous work, Sudarium of St Veronica, is a portrait of Christ that is composed through a continuous spiral line.
