Biography: Hendrik Willem Mesdag initially worked in his family’s banking business. In 1866, he quit his occupation and became an artist. He joined the Hague School and was one of the group’s leading artists. He is remembered for his beach scenes and seascapes. Mesdag’s best known painting is a panorama of a Dutch fishing village, Scheveningen.
