Biography: Frans van Mieris the Elder was a member of a family of goldsmiths and painters. He first apprenticed with Gerrit Dou. He painted in a similar fashion to his master’s, often on wood or copper panels. Although his paintings were successful on the market, Van Mieris spent his income on alcohol and other poor decisions. His paintings became obscure in the 1700’s.
