Artist: Sir John Everett Millais (1829 - 1896)
Nationality: British
Movement: Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood
Media: Painting
Influences:
Biography: John Everett Millais entered the Royal Academy Schools of London at the astonishingly young age of eleven. Along with his colleagues, William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Millais’s early work was dismissed by most critics except John Ruskin, their association lasting until Millais fell in love with Ruskin’s wife. After realizing in 1860 that his Pre-Raphaelite themes had fallen out of style, he began painting portraits and narrative pictures, and also illustrating books. This later work won the admiration of the Royal Academy, where he was President towards the end of his career.
