Biography:
Italian born, Assunta Adelaide Luigia Modotti Mondini, immigrated with her family to the United States in 1906. She began working in a textile factory and then moved to San Francisco in 1913 to work as a seamstress and dressmaker. In 1917, she began a career as an actress and then got married and moved to Hollywood not long after. Around this time, she met photographer Edward Weston and had an affair with him. When her husband died in 1921 in Mexico, she traveled there and found the place that inspired her to begin photographing in 1923. She began as Weston’s assistant but later published her own images in magazines such as Mexican Folkways and Formas. Modotti joined the Communist party in 1927 and was deported from the country three years later. She moved to Moscow and worked for a relief organization. After returning to Mexico in 1939, she died not long after from heart failure.
