Biography:
Juan Martinez Montanes was nicknamed ‘the god of wood’ because of his woodcarving talents. He was the best Spanish sculptor of the 17th century, working mostly in Seville. Here he created his most famous work, Christ of Clemency for the cathedral. Montanes moved to Madrid from 1635 to 1636 where he created his sole secular work, a portrait head of Philip IV. Montanes was influential to other artists such as Zurbaran and Cano.
