Biography: Giorgio Morandi was born in Bologna and lived there his entire life. In his early career, he painted landscapes but later focused primarily on still life. He had brief stints with Futurism and Metaphysical Painting, but on the whole, stayed away from modern art movements. Rather, his still life paintings contain symbolic and literary references and are executed in a small tonal range. He was inspired by the art of Cezanne. His reputation heightened after World War II and he was influential on many younger Italian artists.
