Biography:
Paulus Moreelse worked out of his native city, Utrecht. He studied under Miereveld. In 1611, the city founded its painter’s guild and Moreelse was elected the first dean of the organization. His paintings varied in subject matter and included portraiture and religious painting. He was also the first Dutch artist to paint Arcadian scenes. Moreelse was also an architect. He designed the since destroyed Catherine Gate and probably the entrance to Utrecht’s Meat Market. He also served on the town council and helped found the university in 1636.
