Biography:
Jan Harmensz. Muller’s father was a printmaker and art dealer who gave him his early education. He also worked at the family’s publishing business, The Gilded Compasses. Muller was influenced by the Mannerist work of Hendrick Goltzius, whether or not he actually trained with the artist is unknown. He made the acquaintance of many artists while in Prague, including Adriaen de Vries and Hans von Aachen. Muller lived in Naples and Rome from 1594 to 1602 and made engravings. He returned to Amsterdam and managed the family’s publishing business for the remainder of his life.
