Biography:
Charles-Joseph Natoire was trained by his sculptor father until he moved to Paris at the age of seventeen to apprentice under Louis Galloche. While studying under Francois Le Moyne, he became interested in the female nude. He won the Prix-de-Rome in 1721 with his painting Manoah Offering a Sacrifice to the Lord. Natoire studied at the Academie de France in Rome where he received many commissions from important patrons and won first prize from the Accademia di San Luca. In 1730, he returned to Paris and joined the Academie Royale four years later as a full member. He was commissioned by the Directeur-General des Batiments to decorate the Chateau de La Chapelle-Godefroy, a project that he spent nine years working on. From 1737 to 1739, Natoire worked alongside Carle Vanloo, Pierre-Charles Tremoliers, and Francois Boucher to restore the Hotel de Soubise in France with the help of architect Germain Boffrand. He returned to Italy in 1751 and became the director of the Academie de France in Rome where he taught students such as Hubert Robert and Jean-Honore Fragonard.
