Biography: Juan Fernandez de Navarrete was born in Navarre, Spain. He was nicknamed ‘El Mudo’ because he was deaf and dumb. He traveled to Italy and studied there for several years, supposedly under Titian. In 1565, he returned to Spain and was made a court painter to Phillip II several years later. The rest of his career was spent primarily on painting altarpieces for the Escorial.
