Biography:
Friedrich Overbeck was a German painter who moved to Rome in 1810. He lived there for the rest of his life, making occasional visits to Germany. He converted to Roman Catholicism in 1813 and began creating religious paintings almost exclusively. Perugino and Raphael influenced his work. His most famous painting, Rose Miracle of St. Francis, was created in 1829 for the Porziuncola Chapel of the S. Maria degli Angeli. Overbeck was a leading figure of the Nazarenes and was inspirational to the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
